Founder Feature: Ben Bessler of Local Compost

Meet Ben Bessler.

Co-Founder and CFO of Local Compost.

"Find something that gets you excited. Solve a problem that drives you. If you can do that, then you can start building a business around it. You will have the support of many if you can prove your concept and make it reality."

Local Compost provides a food waste recovery service to divert food waste from the landfill through compost production in the Greater Cincinnati Area.

Q: What makes Cincinnati a great place to start a business?

A: Cincinnati/NKY loves and supports small businesses. If you have a dream and a purpose, you are bound to find a person or organization that will support your vision. That's what Main Street Ventures has done for us!

Q: How did a grant from Main Street Ventures impact you and your business?

A: Allowed us to scale up our business and provide our services to a wider audience quicker.

Q: What does a typical day in your life look like?

A: I'm an accountant by day so I spend my time crunching numbers. I usually have breaks during my day that I spend brainstorming what our next move should be as a company to better serve our community and world.

Q: What is a lesson you've learned that has shaped your work?

A: To change the world - it takes more than a person with a vision. It takes a coordinated effort by millions of people.

Q: What's next for Local Compost?

A: In 2021 we are doing a big expansion to service much of Hamilton County. We have a lot of work to do with that, but once we have established ourselves in this area, we plan to look for the next metropolitan area to make an impact on.
